Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a disease state characterized by persistent respiratory symptoms and airflow limitation that is not fully reversible

Pathogenesis

  1. Inflammation
  • of small bronchi (bronchiolitis)
  • destruction of the lung parenchyma, decrease of elasticity
  • development of emphysema
  1. Obstruction
  • Blockage of the lumen of the bronchi (chronic bronchitis)
  • Disorders of mucociliary transport
  1. Remodeling bronchi
  2. Extrapulmonary changes (endocrine and skeletal muscle dysfunction, anemia, osteoporosis, weight loss)
